The Hempel Foundation has been involved since 2000 in creating an international research environment at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for the education of highly skilled engineers and researchers specialising in coating technologies. The main focus of these efforts has been on setting up PhD programmes with projects on sustainable products and advanced technologies. Activities in recent years have included projects on anti-fouling technology to prevent fouling on ship hulls, fouling release to reduce ship fuel consumption, technology for self-repairing paints, paint to provide enhanced fire safety for steel structures, anti-corrosion paint, paint to protect wind turbine blades from the elements, etc. This has resulted in a genuinely international research environment, with students from Poland, Denmark, China, Russia and Spain.
