FLEX 2024: African leaders join forces to tackle the learning crisis

Held in Kigali, Rwanda, The Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (FLEX) 2024 brought together education leaders from 33 countries and more than 500 participants representing education specialists, implementers and development partners.

As a catalyst funder of the 2024 Exchange, supporting the Rwandan Ministry of Education in hosting this landmark event, the Hempel Foundation is honored to support this important gathering, aiming to strengthen collaboration and scale impactful interventions to bring foundational learning onto Africa's education agenda.

During the closing ceremony, a Declaration of Action was read aloud, reaffirming the collective commitment of 35 African nations and key development partners, including the Hempel Foundation, to improve foundational learning across the continent.

This draft declaration emphasizes:

  • Foundational learning as the bedrock of future learning and economic empowerment.
  • The need for enhanced collaboration, scalable solutions, and robust data systems.
  • A shared vision to end learning poverty by 2035 and prioritize education as a driver of prosperity and security in Africa.
