Safeguarding a Vital Biodiversity Hotspot
The Ankarafantsika National Park, located in Madagascar’s northwestern dry forest ecoregion, is home to numerous endemic and endangered species and provides essential ecosystem services, including water regulation, climate stability, and agricultural support for surrounding communities. However, this critical biodiversity hotspot is under severe pressure due to deforestation driven by slash-and-burn cultivation, illegal forest conversion, and charcoal production—threats exacerbated by migration from the drought-stricken south of Madagascar.
Aiming for Drastic Deforestation Reduction by 2027
By 2027, this initiative aims to drastically reduce deforestation in Ankarafantsika National Park while enhancing FAPBM’s capacity to finance, monitor, and evaluate conservation efforts. Spanning 136,513 hectares, this effort will directly benefit 123,000 people across 140 villages, ensuring that conservation efforts also contribute to the well-being and livelihoods of local communities.
